As part of my Master Degree in Astronomy, i have found an interesting way to build Star Counts Maps. Here are two different methods to obtain star counts when a line-of-sight direction and a magnitude are given. The first method is based on the well-known Bahcall-Soneira star counts model (B&S, 1980, ApJS, 44). The second one is an allsky method based on USNO catalog and uses mapping and analysis package program named HealPix.
Bahcall-Soneira model: Computes local cumulative and differential V Star Counts in a galactical direction (|b|> 20°). (Javascript page)
Allsky Star Counts Map: Computes local B or R cumulative star counts and create an allsky cumulative star counts Mollweide projection map (CGI page)
